Achieving a Rustic Finish with Chalk Paint

There seems to be an abundance of oak furniture in the world and most people seem to have at least one oak piece in their homes that they are looking to refinish, either because it has a sentimental value or because they see the potential in the bones and construction of the furniture. For those looking to personalize a piece or save a piece that might have a dated finish to it, Chalk Paint is a great option.

As many of you DIYers know, Annie Sloan’s paint is not only easy to work with, but it’s also great for achieving a variety of looks, from sleek and modern to rustic and weathered. Check out these awesome videos featuring Annie herself for her tips on achieving a rustic look!

We love how Annie fearlessly layers colors together to create unexpected looks like this one! She has a way of maintaining the vintage feel of her pieces while introducing a modern twist (like this bright pop of blue!)

Whether to wax and then distress or distress then wax is one of the great debates amongst chalk painters! There is no right answer, it depends completely on the look you want to achieve. You are the artist! One thing is definitely true though, using a variety of sand paper grits will give you the most authentically worn look

We love how the details and lines of this piece have been brought into the spotlight with Annie’s distressing. Can you see how using varying grits of sand paper can add dimension?  Distressing doesn’t always have to be uniform! With chalk paint, there are no mistakes, just happy accidents that make your piece unique.
