Miss Mustard Seeds (MMS) Milk Paint

One quart of milk paint covers approximately 70 sq. feet.

Simply mix this powder with water- it’s that easy! A Milk Paint finish is unique and can range from a solid color to a stain, it all depends on how much water you add! It can be used on any porous surface without a primer. It will never chip or peel on porous surfaces as it soaks in and binds with the substrate.

Mixing: Mix approximately 1 part water to 1 part milk paint powder with a blender (strictly used for paint), by shaking in a lidded container, by hand with a whisk or stir stick or with a motorized paint mixer. Add tepid water to container first, then add milk paint powder slowly and mix for 3-5 minutes. Paint out a test swatch to make sure desired consistency has been achieved. If the paint is translucent or runny, it is too thin.  If it the brush drags and the paint appears gritty or chunky, it is too thick.  Add more water or powder accordingly and mix again.  Once satisfied with the color opacity and consistency pour out paint into a wide mouth  Apply paint evenly in long, smooth strokes with a brush or roller. Stir paint occassionally as pigments may settle the bottom of the container. Drying time is approximately 30 minutes. Two to three coats may be necessary to achieve your desired coverage and possibly more when applying a light color over a dark surface. Lightly sand with a 220 grit sandpaper to smooth surface. Remove dust. A top coat is required to protect the paint and bring out the richness and depth of the color. We recommend MMS Hemp Oil for a 100% natural finish or MMS Furniture Wax for a hand-rubbed appearance. A polyurethane or varnish of your choosing may also be applied.

Milk Paint Bonding Agent

This Milk Paint Bonding Agent allows Milk Paint to adhere to metal, glass and painted, varnished or lacquered surfaces.  This bonding agent is a water-based concentrated acrylic emulsion.

How to use this product:

Shake well before using.  For optimum adhesion, clean the surface to be painted with T.S.P. and sand lightly to roughen the surface.  Always test adhesion before applying to a large area.

To use with Milk Paint:  For the first coat, mix one part of bonding agent to two parts of milk paint already mixed.  For an even strong grip, mix in equal parts.  There is no need to add bonding agent to the second coat of Milk Paint.

To use as a primer for water-based paints: Apply a thin layer of bonding agent with a paint brush or roller.  Let dry for 2 hours before applying paint.

This product contains no solvents of VOC and is almost odorless.  Clean brushes and tools with warm, soapy water.  Protect from freezing.

Hemp Oil (534x800) (534x800)

Hemp Oil

This solvent-free oil finish provides a protective, water-resistant surface.  Use on new wood that is bare, stained Milk-painted or to revive old wood finishes.  It penetrates to protect from the inside out.  Does not leave a surface film that will chip or scratch.  This food-safe oil finish is perfect for use in the kitchen on wood or stone.  Used outside, it can restore the luster of old oil based paint or revitalize surfaces such as cast iron.  Test on an inconspicuous spot prior to using on an entire piece.

How to use this product:

Surface must be clean and dry.  Apply small amount of oil to surface using a clean cloth.  Rub gently until it is absorbed into raw wood or Milk Paint finish.  For additional sheen and protection, add 2-4 coats.  With no solvents, drying time is extended, so allow 2 hours between coats and wipe away excess after 12 hours.  Finished piece may take several days to cure.  To maintain, apply a light coat every other year as needed.  To remove scratches, lightly sand blemish, then reapply oil.

Covers approximately 25-40 sq. feet.  Soap and water cleanup.

Wax Pucks

Did you know that wax acts as a resist to paint?  Well, it does and can be used to create beautiful layered looks with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint.  This 100% natural bees wax “puck” easily fits in the palm of your hand and was custom-made for this purpose.  To achieve a layered look, apply one coat of milk paint and allow it to dry.  Rub the Wax Puck over the edges, corners and “high points” of the piece.  Anywhere the wax is applied will resist the paint, so make sure it is applied randomly and in places where paint would naturally wear over time.  Apply a second coat of milk paint and allow it to dry completely.  Distress surface with fine grit sand paper or damp cotton cloth to easily remove the paint where wax was applied. revealing first coat underneath.  Finish with Furniture Wax, Hemp Oil, White Wax or Antiquing Wax.
