Today’s before and after comes to us straight from America’s Heartland! BJ is a native New Yorker living in the Midwest and she says, “I love to curate, collect and transform. Painting is a form of creative expression and I use my furniture as the canvas,”.

Check out BJ’s French provincial style desk before she transformed it…

“This pretty, feminine French provincial style desk was dirty (a greasy hot mess!) with spilled nail polish in the drawers. She was sporting that odd yellow white paint and gold accents typical of her kind. I chose to make her edgy. I used Modern Masters Reactive Metallic paint in copper for the top. The body is painted in a custom mix Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® under Pure and Original Paint Classico in black.”

Before & After: Heirloom Chest

We’re loving the transformation of this chest by Stylish Patina fan Kena!

“I am a DIY Fanatic for sure! I have lived in the Northern Virginia area since 1991, and am currently residing in Alexandria. I love to paint vintage, antiques, or heirloom furnishings,” says Kena.

“Here’s a bombe chest that was passed down to a friend, it was too dark, did not work well with their current decor, and visually took up to much space. So, I got to work on making a new favorite of theirs. This was painted in Benjamin Moore’s SeaGlass, glazed with a custom mix of General Finishes glazes, and sealed to make sure it would last for decades. I’d rather see a piece rescued and refurbished than tossed out, plus it has special meaning to the family. Win win!” says Kena.

Before & After: Dated to Modern

This week’s before & after comes from Stylish Patina fan Karen. You won’t believe the gorgeous transformation she pulled off with a can of chalk paint. Take it away Karen!

“I have lived in Burke, VA for 30+ years. I retired 5 years ago to care for two elderly mothers (who both recently passed away) – so I’m in the process of redefining my new life goals. I’ve had a life-long interest in design, decor and transforming cast-offs into treasures,” Karen said.

“My husband is in the process of selling his mother’s house – and we didn’t want to spend a lot of money on staging – so I visited your store and purchased some Annie Sloan Chalk paint. I give my mother-in-law’s old dining set a new look with two coats of Country Grey chalk paint with minor distressing on the edges. The doors were removed (& holes filled) on the china cabinet and the piece was repurposed as a book/display case in the living room. Painting the dining chair upholstery (Versailles) really helped to refresh & transform the overall look inexpensively- and it was SO easy!”

Before & After: Roadside Find

This week’s before and after feature is a creative take on a roadside find! Stylish Patina reader Christy Scott dishes on her love of DIY projects and how she transformed this forgotten nightstand.

“I’m from right outside DC area, I am a teacher who likes to unwind with a few DIY projects. Living in a small apartment poses some issues with storage, but it keeps me from getting too distracted with new projects and ideas! I love finding thrift store finds or side-of-the-road pieces and turning them into things other people love for their home,” Christy said.

“I found these nightstands on the side of the road in my neighborhood,” here’s a before shot of her roadside score.

“I was excited to have both a shelf and drawer options, and to try out a new skill of stenciling! These Moroccan styled nightstands came together pretty fast, highlighting the grain of the wood and adding a classy detail in any home,” here’s the after pictures of Christy’s creative Moroccan chalk paint transformation.

“The last fun detail was turning an old belt into a handle!” We love this addition!

Before & After Painted Desk

Today we have a reader-submitted before and after! This project is from Amber H – a Stylish Patina fan and paint class graduate. Take it away, Amber!

“I’m a Midwest farm girl and moved to Fairfax 5 years ago. My mom and grandmother had a paint/wallpaper/wood-refinishing business for many years and I helped them during summers in college. There’s something about the smell of paint and wood stain that just seems comforting.”

Here’s the before of Amber’s project – a neglected desk.

“I took the Annie Sloan Basic Paint Class in January and loved it! This desk is my very first chalk paint project – found it on Craigslist for $20. I used Annie Sloan French Linen, clear wax and a tiny bit of dark wax on the detailed carvings. The top of the desk is a mahogany veneer that I lightly sanded and then used Howard’s Restore-A-Finish, followed by Howard’s Feed-N-Wax. I also used a bit of the Feed-N-Wax on the insides of the drawers to give the old, dry wood a “drink”. I’m happy with the end result and am on to my next project!”

Washstand Transformation

I love this before & after from the DIY network. We get these vintage dressers/washstands all the time and this is such a great way to reuse them in a kitchen! You could even add casters!

Before+After w/Chalk Paint

Today I wanted to share a little before and after of a piece we have in this months Rough Luxe Market (RLM), June 26-28th. I bought this vintage wash basin a month or so ago and never got around to breathing new life into it. I kept thinking someone would buy it and see the potential I saw. I was hoping it would be purchased by someone that would paint it a lively color for a patio or even could be cute in a kids room or a make shift bar.

No one saw the vision so she was painted in preparation for this months RLM. The theme is “off to the lake +vintage Americana” so I decided to paint her something neutral so that she could be used in many homes/spaces (something you have to think about when you sell furniture:-). The girls and I decided on old white chalk paint®. Sarah painted her up last Monday and I came in this Monday and was going around distressing pieces we had painted last week and just felt this guy needed a little more dimension. I ended up using a wash of french linen chalk paint over top to just give it a bit more interest. I also popped on this colorful knob for fun. Now he/she is done and ready for many a porch party, kids room or man cave ….

How do you apply a wash you ask? It’s easy just water down the chalk paint super thin, apply the paint over the piece and then wipe off the excess paint while it is wet. This is truly a creative process and you have to you work with it and meld the paint to get the look you are wanting. Conceptually it’s an easy technique but takes a bit of practice. My latest love and a bit of an addiction is swapping out knobs on our dressers. I have been lucky over the years to have found furniture with amazing vintage hardware so I didn’t do a lot of changing of knobs .. BUT.. we finally found some great knobs for the shop and seeing them makes me want to use them!

This tall boy was in great shape and a part of me didn’t want to paint him BUT he went 1 Rough Luxe without paint and didn’t sell so that means he/she was going to go “under the paint brush!”.

We decided to go bold…..and nothing say bolder better than Florence colored Chalk Paint one of my favorites! And the knobs we put on this baby are to die for….

It took me a few weeks to paint this little gentleman’s chest. I just loved it and thought the “right” person might come in and fall in love with it and snatch it up.

It didn’t happen so he ended up getting a makeover. I have been loving the peacock colors and so Sarah and I started mixing paints in the studio and came up with a gorgeous color that we used on this little guy. I will figure out the recipes and share it!

This little guy is in the shop now. I can see him being a great bed side table, end table, “drop station” in a hallway. I can’t wait to see where he will land. He is definitely a one of kind find and lovely statement piece for his now home.

This weeks before + after is actually one that I did in the warehouse for Rough Luxe sale this weekend! We had a gorgeous Empire dresser similar to this one (I forgot to take a before picture sorry!) with fabulous drawers that needed just a little something to make it more “current”.

It was beautiful and I couldn’t bring my self to paint the entire piece (especially the drawers the wood is gorgeous!). So I just painted the exterior I think it really demonstrates the modern function vintage soul concept we try to incorporate in our design work …….

This dresser will not be for everyone (I can hear some of you saying “why did you paint that beautiful wood dresser!”) but I love it and hope it will find a loving home at this weekends sale. I used Queenstown Gray from General Finishes (GF) Milk Paint line and sealed it with GF Satin Poly which we sell in the shop. This beauty will be for sale at this weekends ROUGH LUXE VINTAGE WAREHOUSE SALE. We will also be having a sidewalk sale out front so come and snake a deal or two!

Today our BEFORE + AFTER is from a local Fairfax girl! Finding this desk on Craig’s List for $20 was a serious steal. I just love what Amber did with this pretty little lady. Thanks Amber for sharing….

Mirror mirror on the wall….our featured before + after today is from another local Stylish patina customer in Reston Virginia! She had a dated oat mirror she was looking to breath new life into. Here is what she had to say ..

“I went to my first Annie Sloan workshop in Leesburg several years ago and have been slowly experimenting with the paints and projects. I live in Reston and love the fact that I can drop into Stylish Patina any time. Love the tips they provide for us novices, too!”

And then …..

My friend suggested painting it and I loved the idea. It’s now one of my favorite pieces in the family room. I used the Barcelona Orange as a base, Olive as the top coat and then carefully rubbed away enough of the Olive for the fabulous Barcelona Orange to peek through. Lovely!
