A Boho Painted Secretary

June 18, 2019 Leave a Comment

This textured Bureau was designed by  Charlie Massey, also known as Girl in Blue Designs. Charlie used putty at the top of the bureau, moving midway down the front of the piece, hoping for a ‘dripped’ effect!

Once the putty was dry completely, Charlie used a base coat of Annie Sloan’s Antionette Chalk Paint® to cover the entire secretary. Next, she applied Burgundy over the wet Antionette to mix together to create a hot pink color. She then waited until the paint was dry to continue. After the Antionette and the Burgundy were dry she applied a mix of Provence and Aubusson Blue over the top of the desk. Then the ‘dripped effect’ areas received a coat of Napoleonic Blue, Antionette, and Burgundy.

Once it was completely dry, Charlie conducted a wet distress using warm soapy water and a rag to wipe back areas of the paint, revealing layers of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®. She concluded her project with a coat of Clear Wax!

Annie Sloan’s Painters in Residence create the and most beautiful designs! Here are some of my favorite projects! Are you feeling inspired to re-create a piece of your furniture?!

Meet Paris Grey Chalk Paint®, by Annie Sloan

Soft, gentle Paris Grey is inspired by the painted furniture found in elegant French châteaux or old Swedish manor houses. It’s made from a mix of blue and orange, so it works naturally well with these complementaries. Use it over Primer Red or Cream, or with Old White or Original.

Lovely large Provencial Dresser painted in Paris Grey Chalk Paint®

Check out these beautiful pieces below by Annie Sloan. These pieces are found on her website under the Paris Grey page. Paris Grey is one of the best neutral colors to paint. It goes smoothly with any other color and it can also be mixed with other Chalk Paint® colors!!

A Beautiful Mess Kitchen Transformation

April 25, 2019 Leave a Comment

This week’s feature comes from A Beautiful Mess. A Beautiful Mess is a is a lifestyle company focused on creating happiness through a homemade lifestyle, founded by sisters Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman. This week’s blog is on Mandi Johnson and how she transformed her kitchen! The results are just stunning.

Mandi was so excited to start sharing posts about her kitchen renovation. She wrote she was so eager to start transforming her kitchen with Chalk Paint® 3 years later. She said it was a super crazy project to do but she cannot wait to make her kitchen beautiful again. Mandi’s home was built in 1988 and came with lots of dated brass fixtures and oodles of oak.

“I have the unique perspective to be able to share two different methods of painting kitchen cabinets, since the last time I painted our kitchen cabinets, we used latex paint and a traditional method of sanding, priming, wet sanding, priming, and painting (all using a spray gun). It was A LOT of work! But this time around I wanted to try out a different method, mostly out of wanting less work!” – Mandi

Mandi decided to pick Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® for her kitchen cabinets. She has used different paints in the past but for a change, Mandi wanted to switch it up and go a different route.

This is how her stove wall used to look before rearranging the cabinets to move the stove here, giving more space to the dining area of the kitchen. Mandi got rid of the old countertops. Her new countertops are Corian solid surface in Arctic White, and we made the countertop of our kitchen island bigger so we can eat here too. Mandi outfitted it with the same countertop she had used in her last kitchen renovation.

In the past Mandi has used Chalkboard paint. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® is much more different than chalkboard paint. Chalk Paint is all water-based paint. It is flat paint that will stick to all surfaces without priming or sanding. It has a matte finish and needs to be sealed with wax. Mandi used Annie Sloan’s Pure White Chalk Paint, and it really made her kitchen POP.

This is what Mandi’s kitchen looked like when she first moved into her house.
Mandi pulled everything out. She said she had rearranged all of the cabinetry digitally on AutoCAD first to make sure she could get the footprint she wanted without physically rearranging them in place. There was one spot they had to glue in wood spacers because she didn’t have a cabinet wide enough for space and didn’t want to go through the trouble of fashioning a new cabinet to fill the gap!

Next, Mandi filled the holes where the dresser pulls and door knobs used to be. When she filled the holes she used Plastic Wood brand wood filler, which dries within 15 minutes, so you have to work at a fast pace.

The most important step of painting your cabinets is cleaning them very well. You will need to scrub hard and get all the dirt off so it doesn’t stain your paint.

” I thought I had cleaned my cabinets very well, but after painting, I noticed a few grease dots that were showing through the paint. I had to cover those areas with more than 10 coats of paint for the grease spots to stop finally showing through! Even primer wasn’t working to cover up the grease. So, please take it from me—make sure your cabinets are super clean before painting.” – Mandi

It’s Chalk Paint® Time!!

Mandi was surprised how thick the paint went on. It also dried very quickly, which she thought was impressive. Mandi shares that she was able to paint coat after coat and eventually it only took 3 coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® in Pure White.

**Finished Product**

Meet English Yellow Chalk Paint®, by Annie Sloan

March 19, 2019 Leave a Comment

Meet English Yellow Chalk Paint® , by Annie Sloan.

An English color from the development of Chrome Yellow pigment in the 18th Century and inspired by hand-painted Chinese wallpaper. This was the first non-earthy yellow. It’s also a great fifties vintage color.

This color combo is to die for! This beautiful lounge area is brought to us by Annie Sloan’s Instagram page. We absolutely love this yellow antique side table. It goes perfect with the creamy blue colored wall and the small sofa chair. The coral of the chair blends perfectly in with the antique table. Be sure to check out Annie Sloan’s Instagram, Pinterest, and You tube for some inspiration!

Check out these awesome projects using English Yellow! I have an entire PIN BOARD dedicated to this color if you want to check it out. Here are a few of my favorites below.

Meet Antibes Green! Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan

February 26, 2019 Leave a Comment

Meet Antibes Green Chalk Paint®, by Annie Sloan!!

The neoclassical palette included this bright green, sometimes pure and sometimes lightened with white. The color is also found on rustic country furniture from Ireland and the south of France – a look which is beautifully achieved with Dark Chalk Paint® Wax. For a warehouse look, try Black Chalk Paint® Wax.

Spring is just around the corner and we absolutely love this color. It is the perfect color to use to spice up your home. The distressed look on this antique table by Tami from @paintmetwice is adorable.!The bright green really shows off the distressed wood areas and it makes the table very unique. This definitely gives us real spring vibes and St. Patricks Day is also just around the corner!

Meet Amsterdam Green, Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan

February 11, 2019 Leave a Comment

Meet Amsterdam Green, Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan this strong, deep green takes inspiration from the painted shutters and doors of Amsterdam. It works particularly well with whites and creams and botanical imagery and plants, as well as looking brilliant with earthy yellows and reds – try teaming it with Primer Red, Arles and Old Ochre. It also makes a great backdrop to cool blues, such as Provence, Giverny and the purple tones of Emile.

This beautiful vintage dresser by Annie Sloan can be viewed on her inspiration page.  We love how it’s getting us excited about spring.  We love the pattern of the flowers and leaves as the backdrop. One of our favorite themes is botanical imagery.

Amsterdam Green is a strong, deep green inspired by the shutters and doors found in The Netherlands. Here it is paired with botanical imagery – the perfect green to bring out the colors of the flowers and plants around it.

Check out these jaw-dropping projects using Amsterdam Green I have an entire PIN BOARD dedicated to this color if you want to check it out. Here are a few of my favorites below.  Are you feeling inspired yet?

Our July #SPPaintPro

August 12, 2018 Leave a Comment

We got so many incredible submissions to our July Giveaway and choosing a winner was far from easy! But, we ended up choosing this sweet little bookshelf painted by Kate Dreyer of Kate Decorates. We constantly tell our first-time Chalk Paint® buyers that is really is as easy as we say it is! Chalk Paint® sticks to just about everything, from wood to metal to glass, which is why the possibilities are endless!

Kate transformed these IKEA bookshelves with the help of a couple coats of Antibes Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. We love this bold hue and love the pop of color it can bring to any space.

Are you thinking about painting your IKEA furniture? If you plan to use Chalk Paint (which you should, save yourself a headache!) make sure you give it a good clean first (we like using a little bit of dawn dish soap and water) and wiping it down after with a lightly dampened towel  first.  The packing materials IKEA furniture comes in can sometimes leave behind a little oily residue that can make it hard for the paint to adhere, resulting in cracking. So don’t forget to prep your piece! Waxing it once you’ve finished painting will ensure the paint will last.

Congratulations to Katie for an adorable piece and for being named our July #SPPaintPro. Don’t forget to send us your transformations using our hashtag for a chance to win every month!
