Before & After — Painting Fabric

October 17, 2017 Leave a Comment

This week’s Before & After comes from Lisa in Old Town Alexandria. Lisa suddenly found her tastes in furniture shifting from darker antiques, oriental carpets and wallpaper to the “shabby chic” look. And so began her slow renovation of the 628 sq ft. condo she has been living in for the last 24 years…

Tell us about your project:

Last year, I purchased this adorable blue fabric chair from the Rough Luxe warehouse with the plan to chalk paint it. It was my second project with the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, but the first time I had painted fabric.

To paint my chair, I used the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Antoinette, a pale pink color, on the fabric and Pure White on the wood portions of the legs and arms. I did two coats of paint for both the fabric and the wood and topped each with the clear wax.

I took my time while painting, proceeding at a snails pace. However, I did make one newbie error in not thinning the paint or wetting the fabric. But the good news is, the chair turned out great regardless!

It always helps when you have an adorable, four-legged helper! We are so happy that Lisa enjoyed her project and was able to get the results she was hoping for! We love seeing how people personalize their pieces.

Did you know you could use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to paint fabric? When diluted, the paint will act more as a dye for the fabric, while using the paint directly on the fabric will result in a leather-like feel.

For more information, check out one of Annie Sloan’s tutorials here and then stop in to one of our stores to buy your materials. You can also order them online!

Remember to send us your Before & After pics for a chance to be featured on the blog!

Hemp Oil on Painted Furniture

October 14, 2016 3 Comments

This week I was working in the shop and decided to paint this vintage buffet we had in the shop that was just waiting for a makeover!

img_5535

He is a great height but I don’t love the hardware. We lovingly call these “bat wings” when we are working on furniture.  I don’t know why I dislike them so much but I do so we usually paint + distress them.  I was going to paint him emerald green and do the hardware in gold but eventually I just decided on Aubusson Blue Chalk Paint one of my all time favorite colors.

I decided to leave the top the natural wood since it was in good shape.  After about one and a half coats of paint I grabbed my new Annie Sloan Sanding Sponges (which I do love) and distressed him. next I took a damp cloth and wiped off all the dust….time for top coat!  What should I do….wax, poly, try MMS tough coat, MMS hemp oil??  Hemp oil won out!

img_5521

We sell this product but I hadn’t trie it yet and had been hearing good stuff so I decided to give it a whirl!  I refreshed my mind on how to use it you taking a look at the 2nd half of this MMS video tutorial on YouTube (she has GREAT videos!).

I personally used one of my older more beat up Annie Sloan brushes to apply it but she says you can use a natural brush or rag (be careful of lint!).

I only did one coat and then I took a lint free rag and wiped off the excess oil about 10 minutes after applying.  I wiped it down again at the end of the day.  It’s a little oily until it cures so I’m interested to check out the piece again today. The more coats you apply the higher the sheen.  So far I’m loving this new addition to my arsenal of top coats!  You can buy all the MMS paint products in the shop or online form us here!  Do you want more info on MMS Paint products check out this MMS section on our website!

The Male Perspective

June 28, 2016 6 Comments

About a month or so ago I was in the shop over the weekend bringing in some new furniture and trying to stay under the radar.  I was trying to just get in and out of the shop and back to my kids.  I had my bestie Yvette from Foundry with me and we couldn’t help but notice this adorable father and his 3 kids (2 girls elementary/middle school + 1 boy in a car seat, yes he deserved father of the year for that alone!).  Usually when guys come in the shop they have a list of DIY products they need to purchase for their wife.

IMG_2993

This guy was different I could hear him talking with his girls about colors and the project they were going to do.  I walked up to him and asked him if he needed any help.  He said no thank you that he was just deciding on colors for his project.  I walked away and went about my business of trying to get out of the shop in under 2 hours (if I think it’s going to take 30 minutes it usually really ends up being 2 hours).  The whole time Yvette and I were watching this cute family and she and I were thinking the same thing “How cool is this guy all into using the paint and DIY thing!”.  Yvette was like you need to interview him for the blog and she was right but I was trying to get out of the shop.  So I brushed it off until she was like I’m going to go ask him if you can interview him for the blog!  So she did and here we are… I ended up chatting with Joshua for about 45 more minutes after he agreed to be interviewed.  He and I spend tons of time in our DIY section and I showed him some other cool products like General Finishes Gel Stains and the High Performance Poly that I think are awesome.

I hope you enjoy this fun little interview with Joshua!

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a native of Miami, FL. I came to the DC area after college in 2000. I met my wife Ericka a year later. She was a senior at Howard University. We have been married for 13 years and we have 3 kids (Jaylah – 12, Joslyn – 9, Isaiah – 9 months). We currently live in Alexandria, VA. Our family has an affinity for the arts. Jaylah has been a performing dancer since she was 3. Joslyn is a drummer. Ericka is a fashion marketing teacher at a high school in Fairfax County and started an online clothing boutique. And I paint furniture and love pretty much all things home decor (and sports). That’s probably not a typical combination.

How did you start repurposing furniture and where do you find your pieces?

I stumbled into repurposing when my dad told me that I needed a hobby. Since I could remember, I could always recognize potential. One day I came across a home DIY magazine and decided to try my hand at replicating a featured project. It was terrible. But I took it as a challenge to see if I could become good at it. Over time I just kept practicing until I gained confidence. It probably took me 3-4 pieces before I started to figure it out. I was hooked. I started reading blogs, watching more HGTV, studying You Tube videos, etc. Then I came across the blog of Miss Mustard Seed. Her story really inspired me. Since then, I have entertained the thought of owning a furniture boutique. (That’s why I love Stylish Patina so much. It’s like seeing my dream every time I go there.)

As for how I find my pieces, it depends. But I look on Craigslist and local auction sites to see what someone is basically giving away. But some of my best pieces have been stuff I found on the side of the road. I actually get more excited about those pieces. It’s like finding a hidden treasure. Once the spring comes, people in this area are always putting things on the curb. So, sometimes I will do a drive by on trash days.

Do you have a favorite Chalk Paint® color?

I have not used all of the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors. But I think Barcelona Orange has been my favorite one so far. I thought it would be fun to use a bright color that was outside of the box for me. It did not disappoint.

Do you have a favorite project you have done?

I think my favorite project was working on a matching dresser and chest that I got for free from a man who bought an old row home for his daughter in DC. The pieces were beautiful antiques that needed a little TLC to be brought back to life. I used the Paris Grey Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in combination with the dark wax. It was my first time using the dark wax and it was amazing!

Do you get teased by your guy friends about your new hobby?

Several weeks ago I was having a lunch meeting with a couple of guys I was just meeting for the first time. When I was asked about my hobbies, I said I loved home decor and I restoring furniture. He laughed very loudly. I think the look I had on my face made him realize that he should probably stop laughing. That type of response among guys is actually not the norm. Most are surprised because they know I love sports and have an athletic background. But most think it is cool and odd at the same time.

If is true you were a football player?

Yes, in my past life I did play a little football. I rarely lead with that because I want people to get to know me as a regular guy because that’s what I am. Back in 2000, I was fortunate to sign with the Redskins as an undrafted free agent from Tennessee Technological University. It was always a dream of mine to play in the National Football League. I was able to do that for a short time. I spent time with the Redskins, Dolphins, and played a season in the now defunct NFL Europe.

Any tips for a newbie just getting into repurposing?

I always encourage people to just go for it. You never know until you try. Find something around the house (that you wouldn’t be too upset about if you messed it up) or go to the “free” section on Craigslist and experiment a little bit. Annie Sloan Chalk paint is a great product to practice with because it is so easy to use. You can usually cover a piece in a couple of coats of paint. Also, use You Tube and DIY blogs for tips. Most of those people have already made all the mistakes you can make. So follow their tips until you develop your own experience. I think you will find that it is fun and not that difficult.

Here are a few of my favorite Before + After projects from Joshua!  I love his look it’s very chic + stylish.

Before & After: Fireplace Facelift

March 3, 2016 Leave a Comment

Today’s before & after shows just how versatile Annie Sloan chalk paint is in your home. There is hardly a surface you can’t use it on to give unexpected areas of your home a much-needed facelift.

Lisa D, a former Stylish Patina employee, submitted this week’s fireplace facelift, here’s this from Lisa, “I’m an HGTV addict and a Stylish Patina fan – in fact, a former employee who learned about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint by working a few hours a week in your wonderful shop.”

In getting my Winter Hill condo ready for sale I realized that my fireplace needed an inexpensive facelift – which is likely true for many of the brick rambler owners in the Northern Virginia area. I thought I could put my chalk painting skills to work, and am thrilled with the results.

Here’s the before shot of Lisa’s fireplace.

Before-2Here’s Lisa’s process for transforming her fireplace:

*I first used Simple Green to wash the worst of the creosote off the brick
*I mixed Annie Sloan Old White with a little water and used my Annie Sloan brush to give the fireplace a “thin” first coat; the brush was great on the porous brick and for getting into the mortar lines.
*The brick soaks up a LOT of paint. I had thought a sample size pot would be enough, but realized I should have bought the quart size since the brick is so “thirsty.”
*I used almost “full strength” paint for the second coat and then went back over the bricks with the most smoke staining with a third coat.
*The result is a “whitewashed” look that is more up-to-date and ready to go on the market.

Here’s Lisa’s transformed fireplace.

After-1

Bravo Lisa, your fireplace looks modern and fresh.

Before & After: Barn Dresser

February 25, 2016 2 Comments

Today’s before and after, while it doesn’t feature paint, is a truly *magical* DIY story.

Tarah, a Stylish Patina fan from far away submitted this project to us, a salvaged barn dresser. Read Tarah’s story below!

“I’m from northern Minnesota and after fifteen months remodeling my Grandma’s 100 year old farm house we moved in, got married, and live and breathe DIY!” We’re already sold, Tarah!

“This old dresser was a find out in the barn, I loved how big and heavy it felt and I had the suspicion that it was probably walnut. I don’t know which one of my grandparents’ this piece belonged to but I am so glad I was able to keep it and make it beautiful again!”

extradresser1

“I sanded the whole thing down instead of stripping it and it just about killed me, definitely should have stripped all of the funk and gunk off of it first. I felt like my arms were gonna fall off. I just sanded. And sanded. And sanded. *facepalm* The whole dresser probably has over ten hours of just me sanding into it. However, in the end, once I saw those beautiful tiger stripes across the drawers, my heart just soared and it was so worth it!” said Tarah.

Talk about serious commitment to DIY.

And, here’s Tarah’s beautiful restored dresser.

Before & After: Sweet Side Table

February 18, 2016 2 Comments

We’re excited to share a sweet little reader submitted before and after today! We love seeing what you can do with a can of chalk paint and a little creativity.

Today’s project was submitted by Julie, and her excitement for DIY will seriously inspire you to get busy this weekend.

“I am DIY obsessed! It’s truly amazing how a little paint and new hardware can bring an antique back to life! This was a side table that I scored for free from a friend. Check your neighbor’s curb on trash day or visit a flea market on the weekend. You will be sure to find a diamond in the rough for next to nothing,” Julie said. We could not agree more with the curb score idea, so many good treasures in other folks’ trash!

“I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE painting with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. There is no priming, no sanding, no hassle!” said Julie. Oh Julie, you are a woman after our own heart. That’s why we love chalk paint so much, too!

Here’s Julie’s before shot.
