Annie Sloan Black Wax

August 16, 2017 Leave a Comment

Chalk Paint lovers know how diverse the color choices are in Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.  But, did you know that there are several different types of waxes made by Annie that can further alter the color of your paint?  Using a tinted wax can add an additional dimension and texture to any project, kicking it up a notch.  Check out these tips from Annie herself on how to use her black tinted wax:

Each of the four colors of Chalk Paint® Wax pair perfectly with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. With the consistency of soft margarine and very little odor, they give your painted furniture, cabinets, and accessories a beautiful mellow finish while adding protection and enhancing durability.

Black Chalk Paint® Wax will give a cool, dark finish to your project, enriching colors and bringing out texture in brushwork and decorative details. Use it with Clear Chalk Paint® Wax to seal and protect furniture painted with Chalk Paint®.

Watch this video to learn the best techniques for applying Black Chalk Paint® Wax or visit your local Stockist for additional tips.

It’s amazing how changing the topcoat can alter your piece!  For information on Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, stop by either shop location to chat with our staff or sign up for one of our classes!

Before + After – Paloma Chalk Paint

August 10, 2017 Leave a Comment

This week’s Before + After features a custom project painted for a customer.  Christina, the manager at Stylish Patina, used Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan in one of our favorite colors – Paloma.  This color is a gorgeous, warm, purple-grey. We are so fond of it here because it is a great way to add some color into your home without making a loud statement.

Before:

Christina painted the chairs in Paloma, and she then lightly sanded them for a subtle distressed look.  The project was then sealed with a coat of clear wax.

After:

Great work Christina! Stop by either Stylish Patina location to speak with our staff about completing your own Before + After.  You can also sign up for one of our great classes to learn how to use this product!

Using Chalk Paint on Fabric

August 9, 2017 Leave a Comment

We often talk about how versatile Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan is – you can use it on all types of furniture and colors.  But, did you know that you can even use it on fabric?  Check out these tips from Annie herself:

Did you know you could dye fabric with Chalk Paint®? Dip dyeing with Chalk Paint® is a great way to completely change the color of a fabric!

Annie Sloan shares that Chalk Paint® is highly pigmented and works incredibly well as a dye. The ingredients are simple: Chalk Paint® and cold water. You can control how intense the color comes through simply by adding more water. Linen, cotton, cotton voile, and synthetic curtains all work well with this technique. You can also use patterned cottons or linens. Annie recommends that once dry, the fabric be ironed or machine dried to set and seal the color.

Be sure to see Annie’s how-to for creating a dye wash or the tutorial in her book, Annie Sloan Paints Everything. Get inspired by visiting our Fabric Projects Pinterest board and visit your local stockist for more on these amazing techniques.

Before + After: Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

August 3, 2017 Leave a Comment

This week’s Before + After project was completed by Stylish Patina’s very own Caitlin!  She is a DIY pro who was even able to DIY her own wedding!  Caitlin used Old White in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for both of the following projects.  The first is a table and chairs that she purchased:

Before.

After some paint and distressing.

In her second project, Caitlin really showed off her creative talent.  She attached wooden boards together with metal brackets in the back.  She then painted, distressed, and glued on starfish to complete the beachy look of her coat hanger and shelf.

To learn how to make your own DIY projects using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, check out our upcoming classes or stop by the shop to chat with our staff!

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint: Blue Ombré Effect

August 2, 2017 1 Comment

As you might know by now, Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan is one of our favorite products at Stylish Patina.  You can get a range of effects with this extremely versatile product.  Blues have been a very popular style trend this summer in both Chalk Paint and our Vintage Designer Collection.  Check out this latest posting by Annie Sloan for tips on how to take your DIY project to the next level and achieve a stunning ombré effect using Chalk Paint:

Ombré means ‘shaded’ in French and this gradual change from one colour to the next has been huge over the last year or so, especially in the world of fashion. It’s so lovely to see this idea crossing over to painted furniture!
Restored4U

This show-stopping cabinet is a standout example of the ombré trend. Painted by the totally fabulous and inspiring Ildiko of Restored4u in Ontario, Canada. She is known for regularly mixing my colours to stunning effect.
Ildiko painted this tallboy using a mix of Florence and Aubusson Blue, which she gradually darkened with a little Graphite, for that true ombré look. She used Clear Chalk Paint® Wax all over and a little Dark Wax at the bottom to darken the colour even further.

WhenModernWas

Merging two styles, this piece has an ombré effect and uses image transfer, too. It’s a mix of contemporary and rustic Americana.

The project comes from my Stockist Karen from When Modern Was in San Francisco. She started by applying that sandy colour, using Country Grey, then blended it into Giverny to give the illusion of an expanse of sky.

She then used Image Medium to transfer the image of a buffalo onto the fronts of the drawers. To really bring out the detail in the imagery, she applied Clear Chalk Paint® Wax, which also seals in all of that gorgeous paintwork.

WillowChair

Across the pond, ombré has reached our fair shores, too. This sweet little chair can actually be found in my granddaughter’s nursery here in Oxford!
The chair was painted by my son Felix, who used Greek Blue on the legs which he then blended with Old White to work up to that very light blue at the top. Doesn’t it look gorgeous against that Antoinette wall?

If you’d like to see more of my granddaughter’s beautiful room, you’re in luck! Felix’s house has recently been featured in Rue Magazine. Take a peek for a tour of their colourful, cosy home!

Summer Color Trend – Green

July 17, 2017 1 Comment

If you have been to the shop lately, you’ve probably noticed that a popular trend this summer is green furniture!  To get this look on your own, check out these tips from Annie Sloan, and check out her website for more info:

Keeping it simple can sometimes make the biggest impact, just like this vintage record cabinet by Green Spruce Designs.

GreenSpruceDesigns

Jen used Amsterdam Green and paired it with Black Chalk Paint Wax to create a textured, painterly look.
Beautiful, elegant, and yet totally modern, this is such a gorgeous combination of both paint and wax.

Follow and join in with the hashtag #MixItMonday on Instagram and Facebook.
Brought to you most Mondays, I share the shades that you’ve been creating with my paint!

This gorgeous photo is by the amazingly creative team over at Annie Sloan South Africa. They used Amsterdam Green mixed with a little Louis Blue to reach this stunningly rich forest green.

AnnieSloanSA

I love how they’ve captured the depth of their colour mix by painting it on all sorts of objects!

Another fabulous mix that uses Amsterdam Green is this fresh colour by Instagrammer Amanda Rydell.
AmandaRydell

She whitened the green to get a slightly minty shade and it looks so lovely with all of her pretty plants!
Those clear knobs keep it modern and a coat of Clear Chalk Paint® Wax protects the paint from any dirt or water.

Beautiful botanical style has reached The Annie Sloan Shop!
TheAnnieSloanShop

I am in love with this window created by the fabulous team that run my shop, mother and daughter duo Bee and Lucy.
That pairing of Amsterdam Green, Antibes Green and the outside of English Yellow just fills me with joy!
If you’re in the Oxford area do pop in as we’re selling all sorts of wonderful plants and succulents now too!
To make a similar colour like the one Amanda made above try mixing Amsterdam Green with Pure. The brightness of Pure will create a clean minty green, adding a Mid Century Modern style to your furniture.
Pretty in pink, the combination of Antoinetteand Amsterdam Green is a total scene stealer! I love them together, it’s completely modern and yet classic at the same time. Perfect!
